COVID 19 SEED Grants

Congratulations to Sheila and Liz, and Monisha and Cecilia who were recently awarded COVID-19 seed grants:

  • Advancing Current Understanding of how COVID-19 Affects Pregnancy and Childbirth: The COPE Study (Sheila Crowell, Psychology)
  • College, Interrupted: Individual differences in freshmen college student mental health, identity, and retention in college as a function of covid-19 disruptions to education across four institutions (Monisha Pasupathi, Psychology)

Bert UchinoLiz Conradt Awarded 5-year Grant from NIH

Congratulations to Liz Conradt (PI) who was recently awarded a 5-year grant from the NIH titled “Clinical markers of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome: Onset, severity, and longitudinal neurodevelopmental outcomes."  This work is being done in collaboration with Dr. Barry Lester.  The team from our department also includes Sheila Crowell and Pascal Deboeck as well as Marcela Smid, Camille Fung, and Julie Shakib from the School of Medicine. Congratulations to all!

Anu AsnaaniAnu Asnaani Awarded Seed Grant from the Equality and Justice Alliance

Congratulations to Anu who was recently awarded a seed grant from the U.K.-based human rights organization, the Equality and Justice Alliance, to conduct a study evaluating the impact and reach of a mental health training workshop delivered to a range of stakeholders in the Caribbean. The workshop is aimed at providing education/hands-on training around evidence-based treatments for female and LGBTQ+ trauma survivors in the region, and aims to also reduce stigma towards the LGBTQ+ community in particular. This fund is part of a pan-regional effort to generate information and training resources for legal advocates, medical professionals, psychologists/counselors, and government health educators across the Caribbean in order to push for much-needed legal and policy reform in mental health.  Congrats Anu!

Jackie ChenJackie Chen Awarded NSF CAREER Award

Congratulations to Jackie Chen who was awarded an NSF CAREER award titled “Fostering broader participation and thriving in STEM: A comprehensive investigation of faculty mentorship of doctoral students.”  This 5 year grant is aimed at both basic research on the issue and in training faculty on the unique mentoring needs of underrepresented students.  It is the most prestigious NSF early career award for outstanding scholars who can serve as academic role models both locally and nationally.  Congratulations Jackie on a well-deserved and impressive award!!

Ron McBride Foundation Play for Life Summer Fellowship

This summer fellowship was created to provide support to students obtaining an education in medical and counseling professions that are essential for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, with a particular emphasis on opioid misuse. The Utah Opioid Task Force, Ron McBride Foundation, and Dennis Cecchini partnered together to host the Play for Life: The Tennyson Cecchini Memorial Golf Tournament. The proceeds from that tournament make this fellowship opportunity possible. Mindy Brown and Bailey Speck received this fellowship. Congrats Mindy and Bailey!

 

Jackie ChenJenna Alley Receives Wayne F. Placek Grant

Congratulations to Jenna Alley (working with Lisa Diamond ) who received a Wayne F. Placek Grant from the American Psychological Foundation titled “Effects of early adversity on sexual-minority women’s well-being: Potential neurobiological mechanisms.”  Congratulation Jenna!
